CITY OF SAN FERNADO, Pampanga – It is not exactly a family affair for Gitnang Luson News Service – but it might as well be. Reng Villareal, the eldest daughter of GLNS correspondent Fred Villareal is in the core of a summer art workshop which has been going on since April 17, 2008 at the SM Shoemart in this city.
Fifteen year old Reng Villareal is the youngest member and one of the moving spirit of the budding multi-disciplined art group named Crusada (crusade) of the City of San Fernando (CSF, the capital city of Pampanga and 67 kilometers north of Manila).
The still on going art workshop will culminate on the 18th of this May and is sponsored by the Li’l People Shop of SM Shoemart San Fernando here in the City of San Fernando in partnership with another young art group, the Sikhay of Lara Integrated School of Barangay Lara also here in CSF.
Mr. Jude Pangilinan an artist based in this city, together with Mr. Jules Gonzales, Biology teacher at Lara Integrated School of Barangay Lara (a community in this city) and the moderator of Sikhay (struggle) are among the main movers of Crusada.
Pangilinan, the workshop’s main resource person and tutor said they opened up the summer art workshop to kids of all ages and to make the kid’s summer worthwhile. It can develop their starting skills, or even discover hidden ones.
He added that the whole course is designed for the kids to appreciate art, develop their creativity using materials within their reach to include, old toys, bottles, buttons and all materials normally disposed as thrash. But the course will also include art history, drawing, coloring, painting and even sculpture.

Reng Villareal, an incoming senior at the Pampanga High School (the province’s premier high school), has already garnered several medals and citations for her artworks.
Last March she had the opportunity of exhibiting a few of her works on an art exhibit for the Women’s Month at the City Hall of the City of San Fernando together with the mounted works of National Artist for Sculpture and former Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts Napoleon Abueva; and also the works of Noel Catacutan, a Kapampangan painter and a Director of the Art Association of the Philippines
She said she’s jubilant of the fact that she’s in the art workshop not as participant but as one of the tutors and she welcomes the challenge as the experience she’s getting can serve her well.
“The workshop is already on its 10th day, we have 20 workshoppers already mostly kinder and elementary schoolers,” she added.
Jules Gonzales, said it will also be a learning experience for Sikhay’s members who are among the back up staff.
